September 2011Carolyn FletcherThe exciting news is that we are well underway with construction of our new children's education centre. Below is a picture of the blessing ceremony which ensured we got off to a good start.
The building will provide boarding accommodation for up to 35 children, and two classrooms, a library/computer room, and an area where we will set up a facility for training young village women in sewing and tailoring. For this program we will partner with Life and Hope Association which runs a very successful sewing school in Siem Reap.
We will also have space for conducting other community based initiatives, for example literacy classes. When the main building work is completed the children want to plant a garden and vegetable patch, and raise ducks or chooks. They will also be learning how to make some of the basic furniture for their centre. So a very busy year ahead in 2012!
The children are excited about moving to their new building where they will have more space especially for outdoor activities such as volley ball – a very popular sport in Cambodia.
Certain visitors have also introduced them to cricket!
We have had our usual fun excursions to Siem Reap, and a visit to the Angkor Children's Hospital for a thorough health check.
Once again at the end of this school year the children's results are outstanding – we are very proud of them.
So far this year our major fundraising event has been the sale of wine which Pierro Margaret River Vineyards so generously bottled for Opportunity Cambodia. This has been a great success – the wine is beautiful and has sold very well. We still have some left so if you would like to order please complete and return the order form (on line you can access the order form from the news box on our home page).
A very big thank you to all our generous donors whose support has made our new centre possible.
